Protected ecosystems, stronger communities: Fanamby reaffirms its commitment to local resilience

In Madagascar, conservation is no longer limited to protecting nature: it is rooted in communities. In 2024, Fanamby continues its bold, integrated, and inclusive approach to address the climatic, economic, and social crises affecting the most vulnerable territories.

The recently published 2024 Annual Report reflects this dynamic. Across six intervention sites – from the Avenue of the Baobabs to Fénérive Est – Fanamby has implemented concrete actions to preserve ecosystems while supporting the livelihoods of local populations.

Ecological resilience and community governance

The efforts on the ground have shown that effective conservation relies above all on the commitment of communities and the coordination of local stakeholders. Several indicators demonstrate the progress made:

  • 50% reduction in pressures in several Protected Areas, thanks to the mobilization of community patrols and improved co-management with local authorities.
  • More than 750,000 young plants were planted across all sites, including 392,000 in Anjozorobe-Angavo, with survival rates exceeding 80% in some areas.
  • Significant progress in the restoration of mangroves and natural forests, essential in the fight against the effects of climate change.

Local economy and sustainable value chains

The reality on the ground confirms that conservation and development can not only coexist but also reinforce each other. In 2024:

  • Rice, vanilla, honey, and octopus producers have seen their incomes increase thanks to Fanamby's support, with an average increase of up to 70% in some sites like Menabe Antimena.
  • The social enterprise Tambatra, in Fénérive Est, continued its support for vanilla producers despite a difficult economic situation, ensuring fair and stable prices.
  • The VSLA (community savings groups) continued to grow, strengthening the financial autonomy of women and their role in local governance.

A collective mobilization in the face of challenges

This report also highlights the rise of local initiatives: green brigades, surveillance committees, environmental education in schools, participatory reforestation... In 2024, communities are no longer spectators but actors in their future.

For Fanamby, this is where the key to resilience lies: a conservation rooted in the realities on the ground, serving equitable and sustainable development.
