Where does your garbage go when you throw it in the ocean? Plastic pollution is a global issue that is not well understood in Madagascar as the impact is not visible, in a massive way.
However, it should be an issue for everyone who share the planet because:
- Once thrown away, plastics will migrate to another zone to join one of the floating gyre; a plastic gyre that is bigger than Madagascar;
- microplastics are killing 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals worldwide
- the same plastic you throw in the ocean will eventually end up in your plate!
The only way to tackle plastic waste is to limit the use of plastic. These are a few tips you could use whenever you shop:
- refuse plastic bags, straws or anything made out of plastic;
- use Harona or Sobika (bags made our of rafia), you can also put a tote bag in your backpack;
- buy your drinks in glass bottle rather than plastic;
- buy local: I'm sure you know a place or two where you can buy with a kapoka;
Your wallet and the ocean will thank you!
